Internal

  • Delivered by an organisation’s own Human Resource department

  • Cost effective as the organisation does not need to pay for a professional course or educational materials.

  • Often informal as it is delivered by employees who are already known to each other.

3

Internal

  • Training that is not effectively organised or formally presented might not be taken seriously by those enrolled in the programme.

  • Internal trainers may be good at their job, but might not necessarily have the skills to train others.

4

B. External

  • Outside perspective is one of the main benefits of external training.

  • Delivered by professionals who are skilled in the subject of the training and are more likely to have learnt effective techniques to make the training effective.

  • Can be expensive and hence not always the most cost effective solution for employers.

5

Word of mouth

  • Human Resource practitioners should seek the opinions of fellow practitioners for their recommendations.

  • If the training is specialised, the department manager may be able to offer some recommendations.

6

Government

  • The Workforce Development Agency (WDA), a statutory board under the Ministry of Manpower, plays an important role in creating opportunities for workers to enhance their employability through skills upgrading and for businesses to maintain their competitive advantage with a skilled workforce

7

Professional associations

  • Training programmes supported and/or organised by professional associations are often sought by companies.

  • For example, Human Resource practitioners may focus on training programmes organised or backed by the Singapore Human Resource Institute (SHRI).

  • •Finance professionals may refer to the Institute of Singapore Chartered Accountants (ISCA) on relevant training programmes.

8

Trade/business associations

  • Various trade associations may also organise specially designed training programmes for the industry.

  • The Singapore Retailers Association (SRA) organises courses for the retail industry.

  • The Singapore Hotel Association (SHA) also has a range of courses for those who are interested to join or currently in the hotel and restaurant business.
