What is the Electoral College?

It is a group of people who formally elect the President of the United States.


It is also a process called an indirect election.

Important facts about the Electoral College

  • Article 2, Section 1, Clause 2 decides how many electors each state is allowed.

  • Forumula: total # of state representatives + total # of senators = elector amount.

  • Example: California has 53 representatives + 2 Senators = 55 electors.

  • A Candidate needs 270 electoral votes to win.
