Today's goals:

Review Generalities: We will be able to identify generalities.

Writing: We will be able to catagorize sentences into three levels (Main idea, supporting ideas, detail).

We will be able to write an accordion paragraph using three levels of sentences.

When we see generalizations with "Everyone and No One" we should be suspicious that maybe the generalization is not true.

Writing and Sentence Levels:

Step Up to Writing has three levels of sentences.

The main idea is GREEEN

The supporting ideas are YELLOW

The details are RED

Like a stop light.

Green sentences: Main Topic/Thesis

• Green sentences are general ideas.

• For example - the sentence that tells readers what your topic is.

• Halloween was strange but fun this year.

• We do NOT have details in this sentence (Ex: I wore a mask and tights would NOT be a green-level sentence)

Remember - A Green Level sentence

• Is the main idea, topic sentence, or thesis statement.

• There are no details.

Yellow level sentences

• Yellow level sentences are supporting details.

• Supporting details are ideas or topics that help to tell more about the main topic.

Examples of yellow sentences:

• If my main topic (GREEN sentence) is about Halloween being fun, I might have three "reason" WHY it was fun:

• I get to stay out late.

• I like getting free candy.

• I get to dress up as my favorite characters.

Write down three sentences on the sticky notes.

1 Main idea (Halloween was great, bad, boring, fun, etc)

1 supporting idea WHY it was that way

1 detail about your WHY idea.

Ex: Halloween was fun. I stayed out late with friends. We were out until 10 pm. (you can't use my example).

Sort

• We'll sort these on the overhead.

• Discuss why some sentences are Red/Yellow/Green by writing on your white board - people at home can type their thought in chat.
