Figurative language is language that is used imaginatively rather than literally. It often involves a comparison that allows readers to see things in a new way. Here are three types of figurative language:

• A simile
a comparison of two seemingly unlike things using the words like, as, or as if.
Example: The baby’s hair was like corn silk.

• A metaphor
a comparison of two seemingly unlike things by describing one thing as if it were the other.
Example: Myra’s brain is a computer.

• Personification
gives human characteristics to a nonhuman subject.
Example: The wind whispered to us.
