Segment Addition Postulate

Slide image

2

We have been graphing lines. Lines have arrows at each end and go on forever and ever Amen.

A line SEGMENT is part of a line which means it has 2 endpoints.

3

When we are talking about points we use capital letters like A, B and C.

4

When we are talking about a length of a segment we would use the 2 end points to name it such as line segment AB would just be written AB.

Line segment AB plus line segment BC is equal to line segment AC would be written:

AB + BC = AC

5

We can find the length of a segment on a number line by finding the distance between 2 points.

11

True

If you draw a segment with A and C as the endpoints and add a point B between them then AB + BC would equal AC. The sum of the parts is the whole!

Given that A is between B and C, which Segment Addition statement is correct?
1
AB + BC = AC
2
BC + BA = BC
3
AB + AC = BC
4
AB + BC = AC

Now if we know the whole and a part, can you find the other part?

YES!

Finding a missing segment length with numbers is...

EASY!

doable.

kind of confusing.

hard because I don't know my addition and subtraction facts.

22

Now, if you can do it with numbers can you do it with ALGEBRA???

I think you can. I BELIEVE you can. You got this

3
AB = 11 and BC = 27
4
AB = 11 and BC = 21
