Look at some examples

Round 3,712 to the nearest thousand.

3,000 or 4,000

4,000

The number in between 3,000 and 4,000 is 3,500.

3,712 comes after 3,500.

Therefore, it is closer to 4,000.

What number is half way between

6,000 & 7,000? Answer: 6,500

Think about that when you round 6,247 to the nearest thousand.
