• He was born on December 25, 1924.

• He established a small shoe store in Quiapo, Manila named "Shoe Mart"

• In 1958, Sy first ventured into shoe business, selling surplus and eventually opening first shoe store in Carriedo. 

• In 1972, he transformed Shoe Mart to SM Department Store. 

• In 1983, Sy opened his first shopping mall, SM City North EDSA.
