Review: Comparatives

To form comparative adjectives, follow these rules:

*Add – er to one-syllable adjectives

strong --> stronger

*Add – ier to adjectives that end in y

pretty--> prettier

*Add – more in front of longer adjectives fantastic --> more fantastic

Review: But/Although

“But” and “although” can also show contrast. Remember that “but” is a coordinating conjunction. It joins two independent clauses, and needs a comma before.


“Although” is a subordinating conjunction. It is used at the beginning of a dependent clause. The dependent clause should be followed by a comma if “although” begins the sentence. No comma is needed if “although” is in the middle of a sentence.

*"Different" is an adjective and is usually followed by "from".

*"Difference" is a noun.

*"Differ" is a verb and is usually followed by from.

-Kira differs from her sister.

Part 4: Like/Unlike

"Like/Unlike + noun" usually begins a sentence and is followed by a comma. "Unlike" talks about differences. "Like can be used in the same way to talk about similarities.


-Kira lives in Toronto. Unlike Kira, her sister lives in Newfoundland.

-They have differences in appearance. Unlike her sister, Kira is small with dark hair.
