Moon Phases

  • The moon revolves the Earth = Counter Clockwise Direction.

  • Half of the Moon always reflects light.

  • From Earth, we see different amounts of light reflecting off the Moon.

  • 8 Moon phases = one cycle

  • One cycle = 4 weeks, about one month

  • One phase lasts= 3.5 days

Slide image

3

Moon Phases

  • Waxing - Get brighter or grow

  • Waning - Get darker or shrink

  • 0% illuminated (lit up) = New Moon

  • 25 % illuminated (lit up) = Crescent Moon

  • 50 % illuminated (lit up) = Quarter Moon

  • 75 % illuminated (lit up) = Gibbous Moon

  • 100 % illuminated (lit up) = Full Moon

Hertzsprung–Russell

(H-R Diagram)

  • Relationship between a star's magnitude/luminosity/brightness and the star's temperature.

  • X axis = Temperature decreases from left to right

  • Y axis= Luminosity increases from bottom to top

  • White dwarfs are hotter and dimmer than giants.

  • Super giants are brighter than giants.

  • Main sequence - as stars get brighter they get hotter.

Electro Magnetic Spectrum (EMS)

  • Long wavelength = low frequency=low energy

  • Short wavelength = high frequency = high energy

  • Radio waves have longer wavelength than microwave.

  • Gamma rays have higher frequency than X-rays

  • Ultraviolet light has more energy than Infrared light.

Alfred Wegner

  • Continental Drift Theory

  • 5 pieces of evidence

  • Puzzle like fit

  • Fossils

  • Glaciers

  • Mountains

  • Coal deposits

Multiple Choice

The gradual movement of the continents across the earth's surface through geological time is called

1

Plate Tectonic Theory

2

Theory of Pangaea

3

Continental Drift Theory

15

Multiple Select

Check all the pieces of evidence that Wegner cited as evidence for Continental Drift.

1

Fossils

2

Coal deposits

3

Human remains

4

Mountains

5

Tectonic plate movement

16

Plate Tectonics

  • Wegner couldn't prove how or why

  • Harry Hess found evidence for mid-ocean ridge

  • Led to the phenomenon of Sea Floor Spreading

  • The Earth is composed of Crust, Mantle, and Core

  • The Crust is divided into sections called plates.

  • Two types of plates: Oceanic (heavier) & Continental (lighter)

  • Convection currents in the Mantle move plates.

Slide image

17

Multiple Choice

The process that causes the movement of the tectonic plates that make up the earth's crust is

1

Subduction

2

Volcanoes

3

Convection Currents

4

Seafloor spreading

18

Multiple Choice

True or False: Oceanic plates are lighter than continental plates.

1

True

2

False

19

Plate Boundary - Convergent

  • The plates that make up the Earth move at different boundaries

  • Fault line = Plate boundary

  • Convergent = Collide

  • Continental - continental convergent boundary - similar plates - creates folded mountains.

Slide image

20

Plate boundary - Convergent

  • Oceanic - continental convergent boundary - heavier oceanic sinks and subducts - creates ocean trench and volcanic mountains

  • Oceanic - oceanic convergent boundary - similar plates - older oceanic crust will subduct - creates volcanic arch islands.
