Your assignment is to write a narrative that is an “exploded moment.” The story should demonstrate how medieval society supports or limits your protagonist’s identity.

4

Choose one of these moments to “explode” with detail to really show the conflict your character is facing:

  • Tobias Burgess, when he goes on his next hunt—and meets a wild boar.

  • Tobias Burgess’s cousin, Beth, just as she has learned she’ll be married off to a noble lord in a far-away castle.

  • A villager, who figures out a way to avoid the boon-work at the harvest.

  •  The Wife of Bath, who attempts to solve an argument between two pilgrims.

5

What problem might result from that

in this moment? How might that impact his or her identity?

Remember you are creating a good or bad problem to create their identity.

6

Tobias

  • Young 12-13 year old boy

  • Part of the Noble class but works as the servant/peasant class to become a Knight.

  • Eager to work and do things to become more educated.

  • Cares a lot

  • Become mature as he spends more time at his uncles castle.

7

Beth

  • Cousin to Tobias

  • Girl or Woman of the age 16-18

  • Noble class with fine clothing, good food, and does not have to work.

  • Educated and snooty

  • Mother and Father are Tobias's uncle and aunt. She has a brother and a sister.

8

Villager

  • Works all day and night

  • Very poor

  • Does not own great clothing or have a huge house or one at all.

9

Wife of Bath

  • Rich and has extravagant clothing.

  • Has had 5 husbands.

  • Argumentative and loves talking.

  • Independent and tries to trick people into doing what she wants.

10

Let's add things from our criteria to our narrative!

11

What you need to include in your narrative:

  • Setting, Character, and Events (problem)

  • How will you solve the problem?

  • Who is talking? Do people talk to each other?

  • What's the point of view of your narrative?

  • 3 words you will use in your narrative from our vocabulary list.

  • How can you use sensory details or descriptive language?
