Slope from a table

  • Remember slope is the same as rate of change

  • Look for how the y-values are changing and how the x-values are changing.

  • Slope is always written as

     the change in ythe change in x\frac{the\ change\ in\ y}{the\ change\ in\ x}

Slope from a Graph

  • The change in y-values is shown vertically on the graph (RISE).

  • The change in x-values is shown horizontally on the graph (RUN).

  • Like before, write the slope as

     change in y (RISE)change in x (RUN)\frac{change\ in\ y\ \left(RISE\right)}{change\ in\ x\ \left(RUN\right)}

Slope from 2 Points

  • To find the change in y and change in x you can subtract.

  • The formula for slope is

     m=y2y1x2x1m=\frac{y_2-y_1}{x_2-x_1}

Slope Intercept Form

  •  y=mx+by=mx+b

  • m is the slope (rise/run)

  • b is the y-intercept (look on y-axis)

12

Slope Intercept Form

  •  y=mx+by=mx+b

  • m is the slope, use the formula if needed.

  • b is the y-intercept, written as (0,b)

Point-Slope Form

  • Write the equation with a slope of -4 and the point (2, -3).

  •  y   3=4(x2)y\ -\ -\ 3=-4\left(x-2\right)

  • Simplify to  y+3=4(x2)y+3=-4\left(x-2\right)

  • If you want to convert to slope intercept form, distribute then solve for y.

  •  y+3=4x+8y+3=-4x+8  then subtract 3 from both sides

  •  y=4x+5y=-4x+5
