  • Floods: When the river levels rise and spill over the banks

  • Drought: A period when there is not enough rainfall

  • A year of flood or drought was unpredictable

  • Too much rain = major flood, not enough = drought

  • Around 6000 B.C. farmers began digging trenches to transport water

  • A system of trenches is called irrigation

  • Trenches needed to be unclogged often

  • Gates were added to open and close the water flow
