What is a literal equation?

A literal equation is an equation that consists of mostly variables.

Formulas are common examples of literal equations, e.g.:

 A=πr2A=\pi r^2

 V=lwhV=lwh

 y=mx+by=mx+b

5

Steps for Solving Literal Equations

  • Identify the variable you want to solve. The question will always tell you.

  • Use properties of equality and inverse operations to solve. Always keep your target variable positive.

6

Example 1:

 V=lwhV=lwh

Solve the equation for h.

7

Multiple Choice

Solve for c.

 m=csm=c-s

1

 m+c=sm+c=s

2

 c=m+sc=m+s

3

 c=msc=\frac{m}{s}

4

 c=smc=sm

8

Multiple Choice

Question image

Solve for w.

1

w = ap

2

w = p/a

3

w = a/p

4

w = a + p

9

Example 2:

 y=mx+by=mx+b

Solve for x.

10

Example 3:

 A=12bhA=\frac{1}{2}bh

Solve for h.

11

Multiple Choice

Question image

Solve for x:

1

x = yb - v

2

x = by - v

3

x = by + v

12

Multiple Choice

Question image

Solve the literal equation for the given variable.

1

2A/h

2

2/(h)

3

2Ah

4

Ah/2

13

Closing

Solving a literal equation is just like solving any other equation, except we don't know the value of the variables.

Use inverse operations to get the target variable by itself.
