How to determine or identify the class of a word?

What is the best way to determine the class of a word?

The best way to determine the class of a word is to look at the role or the function of the word in a sentence.

This is because a word can play the role of different word classes depending on how is it used in a sentence.

Example: book

I kept my book on the desk. Noun

We will book the flight today. Verb

The broken pencil is mine. Adjective

The thief has broken the gate. verb

Examples:

I kept my money at the bank.

I will not bank until I get enough money.

The bank manager is my friend.

What is the word class of FLY?

What is the word class is fly in the following sentences?

a. The dirty fly contaminated the food.

b. The tourists will fly to London today.

In the first sentence, fly is a noun because it refers to a thing.

In the second sentence, fly is a verb because it refers to an action.

Beauty is not that important compared to intelligence.

The beauty clinic is closed for business today.
