Nouns and articles:
A noun is a person, place, thing or idea. In Spanish, every noun has a gender, either MASCULINE OR FEMININE. Nouns can be singular or plural. How do you know whether a noun is masculine or feminine/singular or plural? You can look at the ARTICLE. Every noun has an article. Here are the articles:

1. DEFINITE ARTICLE: the
el-goes with a singular masculine noun los-goes with a plural masculine nouns
la-goes with a singular feminine noun las-goes with a plural feminine nouns
Take a look at your copy sheet and notice that all the nouns are assigned a gender with the words el/la/los/las in front of them.
2. INDEFINITE ARTICLE: a/an/some
un-goes with a singular masculine noun unos-goes with a plural masculine noun
una-goes with a singular feminine noun unas-goes with a plural feminine noun

Many nouns end in the letters “o” or “a”. USUALLY nouns ending in “o” are masculine and nouns ending in “a” are feminine. The gender of a noun must be memorized.
