Arguemnt Versus Analysis

  • In an argument writing, you defend you own opinions with evidence. You can take any side of an issue, but you must support it with good evidence like historical examples, scientific facts and personal experience

  • In an analysis writing, you are making claims about how the author is trying to manipulate the audience and how they do it. You evidence is words that you take form the passage, put in quote marks, and explain how they prove what you are saying.

Week 10 Image Challenge

  • Look at the image carefully and *talk* about it as a group.

  • Talk about what choices the authors of the image made.

  • For example: discuss if they chose certain colors, certain types of people, certain types of things, certain words, certain graphics, certain comparison, certain lighting, etc.

  • Discuss why they made those choices? How was it supposed to make the audience feel? How was this supposed to help persuade the audience?

  • Fill in answers.

  • Look at what other groups have written and discuss it

What to do

1- Exist as a living, breathing human being.


2- On Monday or Tuesday, follow the directions given in class to read the passage, discuss it, and discover rhetorical choices the author made.



In other words: As a group, read the passage. Then look for specific things hte author does to persuade the audience to join the army. Talk about what specific things he does to manipulate his audience. Fill in the notes box.

Florence Kelley chooses to compare the children to animals to make the women feel horrified by what they go through. As she described their labors, she refers to them as "little beasts of burden" because they are forced to carry heavy objects all day.
