Octaves

An OCTAVE is the series of eight notes occupying the interval between (and including) two notes.


From C to C is an octave. From F to F is an octave.


For this presentation, we will be focusing on octaves from C to C only.

Octaves

There are many octaves on a full-sized piano keyboard. Each octave from C to C is labeled with a number.


Note that the notes A and B that come before the first C are labeled as A0 and B0, but the first full octave starts with C1. The notes that follow are also labeled with a 1, until the next C, C2.

Pitch and Octaves

Looking at the staff, you can see how the notes of the staff are related to specific octaves on the keyboard.


Note that C4 is Middle C, and that it is closest to the middle of the piano keyboard.
