What is a part of speech used to name things?

NOUNS

• Things: Emma, stone, desk, apple, happiness- anything you imagine.

• Basic part of speech

Types of nouns

• Common nouns: general nouns such as tree, aunt, country, road, etc.

• Proper nouns: name of specific person, place or animal such as aunt Nancy, Peter, London, Kunanbayev street, Pavlodar, etc.

• Concrete nouns: things we can touch,smell, see such as sand, sky, body, building, water, etc.

• Abstract nouns: noun that we can only think of such as beauty, logic, sadness, idea, etc.

• Subject

• Direct object

• Indirect object

• Object of preposition

• Predicate complement: noun that is joined to the subject by a linking verb.

Singular and plural

• Singular: one of smth.

• Plural: more than one. We add -s or -es to make plural nouns.

Collective noun

a word that is used to refer to a number of people, animals, or things that we group together and speak of as a whole.

ex.: a bunch of bananas, a herd of water buffaloes (plural of buffalo can also be buffalo), a litter of puppies, a flock of sheep, and a package of cookies.
