The Old Kingdom​

Pharaohs kept the peace and traded with Nubia. Merchants bought timber to build houses, furniture and boats​. Toward the end of the Old Kingdom, governors in the provinces challenged the power of the pharaohs.

The Middle Kingdom​

The first pharaohs reunited the country and restored order.​ They constructed buildings and irrigation projects. Egypt grew richer for a time, but weak rulers folllowed. They lost control of the country to foreign invaders.

The New Kingdom​

The foreign invaders were driven out. The pharaohs wanted to build an empire, and created big armies. ​They made bronze swords and body armor. A famous pharaoh, Tutankhamen, was buried with a big treasure.​

Rule during the New Kingdom​

In 1504 BC a child called Thutmose III began his reign. Because he was too young to rule, his stepmother Hatshepsut was his regent. But she did not like being regent, and named herself the pharaoh. She ruled Egypt for 15 years.

After the New Kingdom​

Toward the end of the New Kingdom, Egypt declined. After civil war, Egypt was weak and poorly defended. The Macedonians, under Alexander the Great, conquered Egypt. The Macedonians ruled Egypt for 300 years. Cleopatra was the last Macedonian to rule Egypt, until it was conquered by the Romans in 31 BC
