What is international control?
Many of the items in English colonial homes were made in England. The colonists would chop down trees and send the wood back to their mother country, England. English craftsmen would then use the wood to build furniture. England would then sell the furniture back to its colonists. This way, the mother country made money from its citizens living in North America. This is part of something called colonialism. In colonialism one country controls another area, sends people to settle there, and then uses its resources to become richer.

Colonialism
By the mid-1700s, England, France, and Spain controlled many areas of North America. They controlled what the colonies bought and sold. They controlled who the colonies could trade with. England, France, and Spain saw that they could make a lot of money from the colonies. They each wanted to claim and control as much land as possible in North America. Explore the mind map to learn more about this system.

Colonialism
Power: The mother country controlled the laws of the colony. Some countries in Europe were competitive and wanted to be powerful. By having more land, they had access to more resources. They could also increase their population throughout the world.
Charter: The government would give a group of people a Charter. This was a document that gave people permission to start a colony in North America. The colony would serve the mother country. It was not allowed to trade with any other country.
10
Colonialism continued...
Economy: European countries used a system called mercantilism. The mother countries, like England, France, and Spain, controlled the rules of trade. This made the mother countries richer. They would gather resources from the colonies, like gold, fur, cotton, and lumber. The mother countries would manufacture goods like furniture and sell them back to the colonies. This made the European countries rich.
