Subject Pronouns/Los Pronombres

English grammar connection: Pronouns are words that take the place of nouns. Subject pronouns indicate who is being described or who does the action in a sentence. Example: We are friends. = Nosotros somos amigos.

Singular Spanish Pronouns

  • yo = I

  • = you

  • èl = he

  • ella = she

  • usted = you (formal)

Plural Spanish Pronouns

  • nosotros = we (masculine)

  • nosotras = we (feminine)

  • vosotros(as) = you all (only used in Spain)

  • ustedes = you all

  • ellos = they (masculine)

  • ellas = they (feminine)

  • use with a friend

  • use with a family member

  • use with someone younger

  • use with a person you don't know

  • use with someone older

  • use with someone to whom you want to show respect

Plural use of Vosotros or Vosotras

  • only used in Spain with:

  • friends

  • family

  • younger people

Plural use of Ustedes

Spain uses ustedes with people they do not know, older people, and people for whom they want to show respect. Ustedes is used in all Latin America with any group of people. In class we will use it the Latin American way.

Nosotras, ellas, vosotras

  • Use when all the people you are talking about are female.

  • If you have a group of one hundred females and one male, because of that male you will use ellos and not ellas.

  • If you have a group of one hundred males and one female you will use ellos and not ellas.
