2

What will you learn...

  • observe basic forms of energy

  • identify basic forms of energy

  • describe basic forms of energy

3

Different types of energy

  • light energy-Light energy comes from a light source such as the sun. Light helps us to see.

  • sound energy-Sound energy comes from vibrating objects. Speakers, for example, vibrate fast enough to produce sound energy we can hear.

  • heat energy-Heat energy can come from any warm object, but the most common source is fire.

4

  • Mechanical energy is a form of energy that includes the energy of motion. The energy of motion is also called kinetic energy. This energy allows us to move objects and ourselves from place to place. Energy of motion can be used to change our speed, position, and direction.

  • Lightning is a form of electrical energy. Electrical energy powers many of the things we use every day, like computers and lights

5

Some things to know about energy...

  • there are different types of energy to

  • heat and light energy from a lightning strike

  • mechanical energy from moving water at a power plant.

  •  Energy can also be transferred and transformed into different types of energy

6

What kind of energy to see?

  • These kids are in-line skating in the park, which is an example of energy of motion.

  • As the wheels roll over the sidewalk, you can hear their vibration, which is an example of sound energy.

  • The sun is shining, which is providing light energy and heat energy.

7

What kind of energy do you see?

  • The sun is shining through the trees and a fire is burning. Both of these are providing heat and light energy.

  • The father is playing the guitar, so he is using energy of motion and the guitar is producing sound energy.

Multiple Choice

What form of energy does a boy playing a piano produce?

1

heat

2

light

3

sound

10

Can you name all the forms of energy in this picture?

  • Your fingers use the energy of motion to pluck the strings, which moves them.

  • When the strings vibrate, they produce sound energy.

  • If you are playing an electric guitar, that sound energy will be absorbed by the pickups and turned into electrical energy.

Now let's focus on light energy...

Did you ever wonder how we are able to see objects? The key ingredient is light.

12

Objects like light bulbs, the sun, and flashlights produce their own light which allows us to see them.

13

Light travels from a source and bounces off an object, then travels to our eyes.

Slide image

14

How does light travel?

  •  Light will travel in straight lines until it hits an object. .

  • Depending on the material that object is made of, it might absorbreflect, or refract the light

  •  Light that is absorbed stops there.

Prism

The light from most light sources is called white light, and it is made up of all the colors in the rainbow.

The image here shows white light shining through a prism that separates the light so you can see the different colors.

17

If light has all of the colors, why are some things red and others green? How do we see colors? Light from a light source will travel outwards in a straight line until it hits an object. What happens, and what colors we see, depends on the object that the light strikes.

18

What observations can you make about the light source in this image?

What is the light doing?

Slide image

19

  • The light is reflecting off the book.

  • The light is traveling in a straight line.

  • The light is entering the children's eyes.

20

What observation can you make from this image?

  • Light is coming from the lamp.

  • Some light is being blocked by the lampshade.
