POETRY/POEM

A type of literature that expresses ideas and feelings, or tells a story in a specific form.

FORM

The appearance of the words on the page.

LINE

A group of words together on one line of the poem.

STANZA

A group of lines arranged together (like a paragraph in a poem).

RHYTHM

The beat created by the sounds of the words in a poem.

RHYME

 Words sound alike because they share the same ending vowel and consonant sounds.

METER

A pattern of stressed (strong) and unstressed (weak) syllables.

ALLITERATION

Consonant sounds repeated at the beginnings of words.


Example: If Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers, how many pickled peppers did Peter Piper pick?

SIMILE

Using “like” or “as” to make a comparison between two unlike things.


Example: She is as innocent as an angel.

METAPHOR

A figure of speech that is used to create links or draw comparisons to imply one thing is similar to another.


Example: The snow is a white blanket.

PERSONIFICATION

Giving an animal or object qualities or abilities that only a human can have.


Example: The leaves waved in the wind.

HYPERBOLE

Exaggerated statements or claims.


Example: He's running faster than the wind.
