States of Water

  • Water can occur in three states.

  • solid, liquid, and gas

Slide image

3

Solid Water

  • Ice is frozen water.

  • The particles in ice are closely packed together.

  • Freezing is the process by which liquid water is transformed into ice.

  • Water freezes at 0 degrees Celsius or 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

Liquid Water

  • Water ( is a transparent fluid which forms the world's streams, lakes, oceans and rain, and is the major constituent of the fluids of organisms.

  • The chemical formula of water is H2O.

  • A water molecule contains two (2) Hydrogen (H) atoms one oxygen (O) atom.

  • Water boils at 100 degrees Celsius or 212 degrees Fahrenheit.

Water as a Gas

  • Vapor is water in gas form.

  • Water vapor is always present in the air.

Water can Change States

  • Boiling is the action of bringing a liquid to the temperature at which it bubbles and turns to vapor.

  • Evaporation is a process where liquids change to a gas or vapor. Water changes to a vapor or steam from the energy created when molecules bounce into one another because they're heated up.

Water can Change states (part2)

  • Condensation is the process where water vapor becomes liquid. It is the reverse of evaporation, where liquid water becomes a vapor.

  • Examples of Condensation: Having a cold soda on a hot day, the can "sweats." Water molecules in the air as a vapor hit the colder surface of the can and turn into liquid water.

Water is Life

  • All living organisms need water to live.

  • Some types of water are:

    • Freshwater or naturally occurring water.

    • Saltwater water containing large amounts of salt.

    • Ground water is water from rain that flows on the surface and collects underground.
