Definition

Relative pronouns help us to give essential information about a person, object, place, time or possession in a sentence.


Example:


She's the girl who sent me the status report

She's the girl whose house is by the beach

They help us to join 2 sentences that are related:


He is the man. He plays soccer during the nights

He is the man who plays soccer during the nights.

It is the company. It sells carton boxes

It is the company that sells carton boxes


The blue sentences are known as defining relative clause and the red sentences the main clause

  • Which --> to talk about things It's the school which gives scholarships

  • Who--> to talk about people They are the people who revolutionized social media

  • Whose--> to talk about possessions. This is the customer whose order went missing

  • When--> to talk about time. 1999 is the year when I launched my first product

  • Where-->to talk. about places. This is he office where you'll be working.

  • That--> to talk about things/people. It's the school that gives scholarships
