French has three types of infintive verbs

  • -IR

2

3

6

Regular ER verbs

The first step in conjugating ER verbs is to take off the "ER"

In English, we take off the "to"

Example: He to like the book. --> He like the book.
Il aimer le livre. --> Il aim le livre.

7

Regular ER verbs

Then, once you have the stem/base, you can add the correct endings.
Example: He likes the book.
Il aime le livre.

FINDING THE BASE/STEM:
For example, with the verb "marcher", you would take off the -er at the ending, which leaves you with the base "march-".

8

Open Ended

What would be the base for the following infinitive ER verbs?

Marcher

Jouer

Parler

Danser

Étudier

9

Conjugating regular ER verbs (endings)

  • Je --> add -e

  • Tu --> add -es

  • Il AND Elle --> add -e

  • Nous --> add -ons

  • Vous --> add -ez

  • Ils AND Elles --> add -ent

10

Practice...

Take the example of "jouer"

You first take off the -er, leaving you with the base of jou

Then you add the endings, giving you

Je joue

Tu joues

Il, Elle joue

Nous jouons

Vous jouez

Ils, Elles jouent

1

-e

2

-es

5

-ent

17

Notice...

Notice that we are keeping il and elle on the same line as well as ils and elles

REMINDER:

Il can mean he or it

Elle can mean she or it

It depends on if the "it" is masculine or feminine;

"une table" is an "it" but it's feminine, so we use elle;

"un crayon" is an "it" but it's masculine, so we use il

If whatever you are talking about is one singular thing, use the il/elle conjugation (which is the same)

18

Multiple Select

For which of the following would you use the il/elle conjugation of just adding an -e?

1

une table

2

un crayon
