Adverbs are words that modify

  • verb (Tom Longboat did not run badly.)

  • adjective (Tom is very tall.)

Adverbs modify Verbs

  • This means that they describe the way an action is happening.

  • Phillip sings loudly in the shower.

  • My cat waits impatiently for his food.

  • Adverb adds a degree of intensity to the adjective.

  • The woman is quite pretty.

  • The weather report is almost always right.

  • This bridesmaid dress is a very unflattering shade of puce.

  • It tells to what extent another adverb modifies a word.

  • The adverb that modifies another adverb is called intensifier.

5 Types of adverbs5

  • Adverbs of Frequency indicate how often something is done. (always, usually, never, sometimes, rarely)

  • Adverbs of Place describe where something is done. (above, below, elsewhere, outside, upstairs)

  • Adverbs of Manner describe the manner or way in which something happens. (slowly, completely, cheerfully, fast)

  • Adverbs of Time describe when something is done in indefinite and definite time. (soon, later, already, annually, hourly, now)

  • Adverbs of Degree describe the degree or extent to which something happens. (entirely, quite, very)
