Place Value
Times Ten
2
When we multiply by ten, we are moving one place left on the place value chart. Any place missing a digit, needs a zero.
1 x 3 = 3
10 x 3 = 30 (3,6,9,12,15,18,21,24,27,30) can also say 3 x 10 = 30
100 x 3 = 300 (can also say 30 x 10)
1000 x 3 = 3000 (can also say 300 x 10)
3
Do you notice the pattern?
1 x 5 = 5
10 x 5 = 50
100 x 5 = 500
1000 x 5 = 5000

Each place value is ten times greater when moving to the left. If I move multiple jumps, I have to do multiples of ten. For example:
From the ones to the hundreds is x10 x10 (or x100) Skipping two places
From the ones to the thousands is x10 x10 x10 or x1000) Skipping three places
9
So if I have the number 16,562
The six in the thousands place is 100 times greater than the six in the tens place
(I skipped two places)
10
In the number 34, 239
The value of the 3 in the ten thousands place is 1,000 times greater than the value of the 3 in the tens place
(I skipped 3 places)

Just like we use the place value to move left for "ten times greater"; we can also find "ten times less."
We move one step to the RIGHT per place value
This would be dividing
15
5,000 */* 10 = 500
500 */* 10 = 50
50 */* 10 = 5
Do you see the pattern?
To divide by 100 - move two steps right
To divide by 1000 - move three steps right
To divide by 10,000 - move four steps right
