El verbo ser (singular)

In Spanish, there are two verbs that mean "to be" You have already studied the singular forms of the verb "estar" Remember that "estar" is used to indicate location (where something is) or is combined with an adjective to describe how something is.

• I am - yo soy

• You are - Tú eres

• You (formal) he, she is - Usted, él, ella es

The verb "ser" is used to identify a person or an object.

• ¿Qué es esto? ----> Es un cuaderno.

• ¿Quién es ella? ------>Es mi hermana

• ¿De quién es el libro? -----> Es de mi mamá.

The verb "ser" is combined with an adective to tell us basic characteristics (Ex: Tall -Alto, Short-Bajo) Compare both columns:
