  • Atom, which is the basic unit of matter is composed of protons, neutrons, and electrons.

  • Protons are responsible in setting the identity of an element (e.g. 1 proton = hydrogen, 2 protons = helium, 3 = lithium and so forth...)

  • Neutrons act as the "glue" or binding force that hold the nucleus together.

  • Electrons are mainly responsible for chemical bonding (next lesson)
