Results of the Reformation

  • The Roman Church launched an extensive campaign to stop and reverse the spread of the Protestant movement.

  • This became known as the Catholic Reformation or the Counter Reformation to some people.

Jesuits

  • New Monastic orders, such as the Society of Friends, or Jesuits, were founded to stop the spread of the Reformation

  • The Jesuits used any means necessary to gain converts for Rome and reverse the gains of the Protestants

Wars of Religion

  • Huguenots- French Protestants

  • Edict of Nantes- Henry of Navarre became king of France and guaranteed limited religions toleration

  • The Thirty Years' War- the last great religious war fought in Europe

  • The wars that erupted were for territory but also fought over religion. In the end the Roman Church did not win everyone over.
