Reading Introduction: Finding a Main Idea and Key details (Part 1)

On a cold October night at an event at PineWoods, Jack went to go get something to eat. They both had fun playing in the snow. "Wow! I have never seen such a beautiful scene of the forest!" gasped Amy.

Amy walked toward a tall pine tree and stood next to it. The tree was quite tall compared to her. Amy touched the bark of the tree and saw how rough it was.

While Jack finished eating ramen, they left to go back home because it was so cold. "I have had a great time here!" yelled Amy.

"Lets go home." said Jack.

As they walked home, they saw a fuzzy squirrel hopping down a tree.

Reading Introduction: Finding a Main Idea and Key details (Part 2)

After reading a text, ask yourself some questions:

-What did the author try to explain/tell?

-What was the story/article mainly about?

-Are there any supporting details about this?

- Is the author persuading, informing, or entertain?

-Can I make a summary after reading this?

Ask your self these questions to understand

what the main idea and key details are about the piece of writing that you are reading.

4

Reading Introduction: Finding a Main Idea and Key details (Part 3)

We just asked ourselves the questions. So now we must answer those questions.

-The author who wrote the story was talking/explaining a scene or a time 2 people went somewhere in the cold and enjoyed it there.

-The story was mainly about an event where 2 people were and enjoyed it there.

-In the story, it says, "I have had a great time here!" yelled Amy. This supports that they had a good time at the event

-I think that the story is to entertain the reader about an event on a cold day

-We can make a summary about Amy and Jack enjoying an event

Reading Introduction: Finding a Main idea and Key Details (Part 4)

Okay! We have answered all the questions. Now lets reorganize it. Lets take out the important information. (Main Idea & Key details, Summary)
Main Idea- Jack and Amy are enjoying a beautiful event at PineWoods
Key Details-
On a cold October night at an event at PineWoods...
"I have had a great time here!" yelled Amy.
Summary-
Jack and Amy went to an event at PineWoods. As they were there, Jack ate while Amy looked at a tree. In the end, they both enjoyed being at the event.

Grammar

Heard of grammar before? Good! Well in my class, we are learning about grammar in 5th grade.

Lets correct this sentence:

the sun was so bright, that you had to wear Sun glasses.

What needs to be added, changed, or taken away from this sentence to be correct?

Hmm... from what I know, when you begin your sentence the first letter should be capitalized. So the t in The should have been capitalized.

Next, we will see that Sun is capitalized. I don't think it should be. So we must change the s in Sun-glasses to be lowercase.

Punctuation, at the end of every sentence, there should be a period or other ending. So there should be a period and comma.

7

Grammar (2nd example)

Lets look at another example. But with speech!

Correct the sentence:

"i want to eat ice cream Tonight." said kyle.

First, lets look at capitalization, I think that the "i" that is being said should be capital. Because you are beginning the sentence. I think that the k in kyle should also be capitalized, its the name of a person.

Next, lets look if we need anything to be lowercase. I don't think that "Tonight" should be capitalized. Because it is not a proper noun.

Last, lets look at punctuation, I think that there should be a period after tonight. Because we are ending the sentence.

Hand Accounts (Part 1)

You might have heard an account before. Maybe you have gone into your sister's account? No, that's not the account I am talking about. I mean an account like a firsthand account and a second hand account. Lets dive deeper!

EQ- What is a hand account. And how can I find out?

Lets read 2 short articles to to see what a firsthand account is and what a secondhand account is.

9

Hand Accounts (Part 2)

Lets read 2 hand accounts.

I went to the best carnival ever! It was so fun. My favorite ride was the Spinning Spiral! That place was a blast. There were so many laughs and cheers! I enjoyed the entire experience. I ate ice cream and went on a lot of rides. I will never forget the RedCape Carnival.

The RedCape Carnival began is 1997. It was a big success and hundreds of people went. There was face painting, rides, and food courts. It had so many rides like the Spinning Spiral, the Monkey Monster, and the Blue Blade. This was a good carnival.

Now that we read, lets organize these short articles.

10

Hand Accounts (Part 3)

We finished reading. Now lets see which one is a first or second hand account. Look at some of the words below that can help you recognize a account.

First Hand account- Written by someone who was actually there to experience an event. It may also include opinions

Second Hand account- Written by someone who was not actually there to experience the event. (Might sometimes read an article to inform the reader about it)

Firsthand account signal words- I, We, Us, Our, Me, My

Secondhand account signal words- Them, (s)he, They, him (or she)

Using these words can help you identify a firsthand account or a second hand account

11

Text structure

Text structure is the way a article is organized. Text structure is important to get a better understanding of what a article is telling you.

EQ- What are ways to identify text structures? And what text structures are there?

As you can see in the image, there are 5 types of text structures shown. Such as description, sequence, compare and contrast, problem and solution, and cause and effect.

12

Understanding Text Structure

Now that you know the 5 different text structures, lets see what each of those text structures mean and signal words that can tell you which text structure the article is about.

(Turn to the next slide to see more information on text structure) -->

Text Structure: Definitions

Definitions for each text structure:

Description- A type of text structure that has a topic with other details or examples supporting it

Sequence- A type of text structure that orders events in sequence or in order (Chronologic)

Compare and Contrast- A type of text structure that compares the similarities and differences about two things

Problem and Solution- A type of text structure that has a problem and later on in the article there will be a solution

Cause and Effect- A type of text structure that has a cause that later results in a effect
