Terms

Terms are variables and constants separated by a + or - sign.

Example: 2x + 3y - 2 + 5 - 4y

2x, 3y, -2, 5, -4y are all terms that are separated by + - signs

therefore this expression has 5 terms

2 step equations

2x + 4 = 6

  • 1) First we need all the variables on one side and the constants on the other so we subtract 4 from both sides to get 2x = 2

  • 2) Next we isolate the variable. Since, 2x is 2 times x we divide both sides by 2 to get x = 1

Multiple Choice

2x + 3x + 5 = 20

This is a multistep equation. We need to combine like terms on the left side of the equal sign to get a two step equation. What equation shows the equation equivalent (equal) to the equation above with combined like terms.

1

10x = 20

2

5x + 5 = 20

3

30x

4

6x + 5 = 20

12

Multiple Choice

Sometimes we need to distribute before we can get a two step equation.

3(x+2) = 24

After you distribute the equivalent equation becomes:

1

5x = 24

2

3x + 2 = 24

3

3x + 6 = 24

4

3 + 2x = 24
