Distribution of Data

We can use the shape of a graph to determine how the data is distributed.

2

Normal Distribution

Also known as symmetric or bell shaped. This is when the graph is split in half and both sides look identical.

3

Positively Skewed

Also known as Skewed to the RIGHT.

This is when the data has a "Tail" on the right side of the graph.

4

Negatively Skewed

Also known as Skewed to the LEFT.

This is when the graph has a "Tail" to the left.

5

Uniform

This is when the graph looks the same and the data is evenly spread out. There are no high peaks and it will make a somewhat rectangular shape.

Stem and Leaf Plots

  • These can be skewed as well

  • You want to imagine turning the chart to it's side and seeing if it has a "Tail" to the left or right.

  • The picture shows an example of a positive skew (skew to the right)
