What's his deal?
So, Atlas led the titan rebellion against Zeus, which didn't work out in his favor.
His punishment was to hold up the sky for eternity (the famous sculpture is depicted on this slide)
Because he had to be so still, people knew where to find him and he had a lot of visitors.

Hercules' visit
Hercules: Hercules was tasked with the 10 labors and needed help with golden apples. He came to Atlas to ask for a hand.
The plan was to momentarily switch roles so Atlas could retrieve the golden apples while Hercules held up the sky
Atlas tried to outsmart Hercules and retrieve the golden apple and not return
Hercules was one step ahead, asked Atlas to hold the sky while he readjusted to be more comfortable, then Hercules ditched with the apples

Perseus' visit
Perseus was on some journey and needed a break so he asked Atlas for hospitality.
Atlas, who feared another trick turned him down.
Perseus held up Medusa's head and turned him into stone
This is where the name of the Atlas mountains in Africa is believe to be originated from

Different versions of the story:
because myths are passed down alot of the stories have little differences. In one version atlas is believed to have to hold heaven and the sky on two pillars, while in this version he has to carry the weith of night and day on his bare back.
