Cell Division

2
Multiple Choice
What type of cells are you made of?
prokaryotic
eukaryotic
alien
3
You are Eukaryotic
All complex organisms are made of eukaryotic cells. These cells have a clearly defined nucleus and are capable of specializing to form tissues and organs.
4
Multiple Choice
Prokaryotic cells divide by this method:
mitosis
cytokinesis
binary fission
meiosis
5
Prokaryotes use binary fission
These simple, single-celled organisms just split when they get too large.
6
Multiple Choice
Which term is not a part of the Eukaryotic cell cycle?
cytokinesis
mitosis
interphase
fission
7
The cell cycle:
Interphase: cell grows, replicates DNA, does it's job (about 90% of time)
Mitosis: The nucleus divides (around 10% of time)
Cytokinesis - rest of cell divides and membrane grows back

Fill in the Blanks
Type answer...
9
The term for regular body cells is somatic cells and the term for reproductive cells is gametes
10
Multiple Choice
All somatic cells contain____ DNA
the same
different
11
All somatic cells contain the SAME DNA
12
Multiple Choice
What's so important about stem cells?
The are not differentiated, so they can become and replace other types of cells
They are most prevalent in the embryonic phase
They may be a used to cure certain diseases
All of these answers
13
Yes, stem cells can do all those things!
Stem cells are undifferentiated cells. There are two types: embryonic and somatic stem cells. Embryonic (found in unborn babies) stem cells have a higher ability to differentiate, but stem cells can also be found in some somatic (body cells) especially bone marrow. Stem cells take cues from body sources and differentiate into other cells.
14
Multiple Choice
A mutation is...
Always a bad thing
An error in the cell cycle that results in a change in the DNA
Always another name for cancer
something that can be fixed with additional cell divisions.
15
A mutation is ....
An error in the cell cycle that results in a change in the DNA
mutations can be good, bad, or neutral
mutations occur at a very small rate, but since your since your body has about 37 trillion cells, they happen in everybody
mutations can occur randomly or because something interfered with the cell cycle - like radiation, temperature, or chemicals.

If you can't find those answers - this is your chance to ask questions!
Also, if you are studying at home tonight and think of a question, please write it down so you can ask BEFORE the quiz starts tomorrow.
