What is Software

Objectives

• To understand what software is

• To identify the different classifications of software used inside of a computer

• To be able to explain the need and differences between each

So what is Software?

• Any programs or files that exist electronically:

  –Windows

  –PowerPoint

  –Website data

  
  

• They’re all software

Software is instructions

A computer has to constantly take instructions to work

All a computer program is then is a series of instructions to follow in order to do something

There are lots of different types of software then can run on a computer and they all do different things

Operating Systems

These are the most important program on any computer, as they allow everything to work together properly

Operating systems let us:

Give us a user interface so we can actually use the computer

Install and run other programs Manage memory and data on the system

Let us add other devices to use such as cameras, USB sticks and even controllers for things like playing games!

Operating Systems

Because this is one of the most important types of software, they are also usually some of the most commonly known:

Windows is created by Microsoft and works with any modern PC

OSX is the Apple operating system used on the MacBook and Mac series of computers

Android is a common operating system for mobile phones and tablet computers

iOS is the Apple operating system for use on iPhones and iPads

Utility Software

• Operating systems have a lot to do, so they sometimes need a little bit of help

• Think about a headteacher trying to run a school, they have deputy and assistant heads to help manage other tasks for them

• Utility software does this for a computer’s operating system, it does all of the little jobs that help a computer run smoothly, things like: Antivirus software

  Firewalls

  Disc clean-up

  Sound and network software

Applications Software

• This is what we are most commonly used to when we use a computer

  Applications are the specialist software that we use to do things when we work, research or play

  Games like Fortnite and Warzone are applications as well!
