Fun facts

  • The Amazon is the world’s largest tropical rainforest. Covering over 5.5 million square kilometres, it’s so big that the UK and Ireland would fit into it 17 times!

  • In 2007, a man named Martin Strel swam the entire length of the Amazon river! To complete his splashing jungle journey, Martin powered through the water for up to ten hours a day for 66 days!

The Amazon rainforest

It is the world’s largest tropical rainforest, famed for its biodiversity. It’s crisscrossed by thousands of rivers, including the powerful Amazon. River towns, with 19th-century architecture from rubber-boom days, include Brazil’s Manaus and Belém and Peru’s Iquitos and Puerto Maldonado.

Read the background information about Ed Stafford

On August 9, 2010, Ed Stafford became the first person to walk the whole length of the Amazon River, from its source in the mountains of Peru to the Atlantic Ocean. He walked over 6,000 kilometers, climbing steep mountains and fighting his way through thick tropical jungles. Ed thought it would take him a year to complete the walk along the river, but it took 860 days – more than twice as long!  The purpose of Ed’s expedition was to show people how amazing and important the Amazon Rainforest is. He wrote a blog during his journey because he wanted people to be more aware of what was happening to the Amazon. He hoped his adventure would influence people to take action and protect the rainforest. As Ed said, “If they know how valuable the rainforest is, then the Amazon can be saved.”
