Subject-Verb Agreement

Today's Objectives

• Know: The tense of a verb tells when the action takes place. Present tense tells what happens now.

• Understand: Subjects and verbs must agree.

• Be Able To: Identify present-tense verbs with singular and plural subjects. 

The cat drinks from the bowl.

The verb in this sentence is written in present tense which means it's happening NOW.

SINGULAR SUBJECTS

• Add -s to the end of the verb when the subject is singular (one)

FOR EXAMPLE

She cheers for the home team.

PLURAL SUBJECTS

• Nothing is added to the verb when the subject is plural (more than one)

FOR EXAMPLE

They cheer for the home team.

A verb must agree in number with its subject.
