Logo, temos duas formas, o there was e o there were. A primeira significa existia, havia ou tinha; a segunda, existiam, havia. Observe:

• Passado plural negativo
Já o passado plural negativo segue as mesmas regras do afirmativo, com a única diferença de ser empregado em frases negativas.
Sendo assim, ele é acompanhado do ‘not’ após o ‘were’ ou ‘was’.
7
There were NOT two dogs in the living room (Não havia dois cachorros na sala de estar);
There were NOT some cars parked in the street (Não havia alguns carros estacionados na rua);
8
Passado plural interrogativo
Para o uso do passado plural interrogativo do there to be, basta trocar a ordem entre o there e o verbo to be em questão (ou seja, were ou was).

Was there a book inside your bag? (Havia um livro dentro da sua mala?);
