Adding and Subtracting Fractions

  • Find a common denominators by looking at what multiples your two current denominators have in common.

  • What you do to the bottom, you gotta do to the top (ie- if you multiply the denominator by 3 to get to your new denominator, you have to do the same thing to your numerator)

  • Once you have a common denominator and your NEW numerators, add or subtract your numerators, keeping your denominators the same.

  • Make sure your answer is simplified by checking that there are no common factors between your numerator and denominator. If there are, simply divide top and bottom by that factor. ( ie-

     36÷33=12\frac{3}{6}\div\frac{3}{3}=\frac{1}{2}
