Welcome to the lesson of . . . Decimals and Percentages!

2

Learning Intention:

  • I will be able to recognize the place value of decimals, patterns and find values less, more or equal vice versa with percents.

3

Success criteria:

  • I can recognize place values of decimals, tell which decimal is bigger or smaller and figure out patterns in decimals

  • I can recognize patterns and which is bigger or smaller in percents

4

Decimals

5

Intro

A decimal number is a number that has numbers before the decimal point. It can be used to show a whole number with a bit more or that a number is less than 1. E.g. 1.45, 0.35

6

Tenths

A tenth is the decimal place value that is 1 number before the decimal point. Like this number: 0.4. Try converting the numbers on the next slides numbers from words to numeral.

7

Fill in the Blank

zero and a two tenths = ?

8

Fill in the Blank

zero and 6 tenths = ?

9

Fill in the Blank

zero and nine tenths =

10

Fill in the Blank

zero and five tenths = ?

11

Hundredths

Hundredths are the complete opposite of hundreds like tenths are the opposite of tens. Hundreds are TWO places before the decimal point. Like this numeral: 0.04 or with tenths: 0.46. Try converting the numbers in words in the next slides to numerals.

12

Fill in the Blank

zero and forty-two hundredths = ?

13

Fill in the Blank

zero and sixty-nine hundredths = ?

14

Fill in the Blank

zero and nine hundredths = ?

15

Fill in the Blank

zero and five hundredths = ?

16

More than, Less than

Let's see if you can recognize which decimal is bigger or smaller than each other. Just a quick recap on the symbols: < is smaller than and > is bigger than.

17

Fill in the Blank

Is 0.4 > 0.3?

18

Fill in the Blank

Is 0.56 > 0.55?

19

Fill in the Blank

Is 0.45 > 0.46?

20

Fill in the Blank

Is 0.67 < 0.68?

21

Patterns

Let's see if you can spot the pattern in the decimals!

22

Fill in the Blank

Complete: 0.5, 0.7, _._, _._, _._

23

Fill in the Blank

What is the pattern? 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5

24

Percentages

25

Intro

Percentages are similar to decimals as fractions are similar to decimals to, but written like this: 80%. They are commonly used to show a number less than 1. They are mostly written as whole numbers, and much more complicated when written in decimals. In this lesson we focus on the whole numbers.

26

Real life surrounds

Math, including percents are arround us. You may have seen sale signs on an eshop or shop saying something like: Sale! 80% Off. What else can you find that involves percents that are around us?

27

Patterns

Can you spot the pattern in these percents?

28

Fill in the Blank

Complete: 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, __%, __%, __%

29

Fill in the Blank

What is the pattern? 12%, 18%, 24%, 30%, 36%

30

That's it!

Congrats! Why don't you put your skills to the test with the quiz, Decimals and Percentages?
