Let's Review 3.01

  • The colonists would chop down trees and send the wood back to their mother country, England.

  • English craftsmen would then use the wood to build furniture. England would then sell the furniture back to its colonists. This way, the mother country made money from its citizens living in North America. This is part of something called colonialism.

Fort Life 3.03

A fort is an army post made up of many buildings and defended by soldiers. Forts built in colonial days usually had a good view of the surrounding area. Most had towers allowing soldiers to be ready against attacks. Some forts were built along cliff tops, next to waterways. This allowed soldiers to see ships passing.

23

Louisiana Purchase

The young country had made a large purchase from France called the Louisiana Purchase Treaty. It also signed a treaty with Spain called the Adams-Onis Treaty. These lands became American territories and eventually states. The United States gained land through many purchases and treaties.
