Quick Overview of Sentence Structure

  • Simple Sentence (independent clause) needs a subject and a predicate - John ate pizza.

  • Compound Sentences combine two simple and related independent clauses with a comma FANBOYS - John ate pizza, but I ate a salad.

Commas can be used in different ways

  • They can separate adjectives - Steve had a bright, happy smile

  • They can be used to indicate a list - I need to buy Oreos, carrots, and ice cream.
