Personification- A figure of speech which gives the qualities of a person to an animal, object, or idea.

  • "My fingers leave sighs in the dust." (Out of the Dust, pg.139)

  • The tall grass danced in the breeze.

Alliteration- The repetition of usually initial/beginning consonant sounds in two or more words or syllables.

Metaphor- Comparing two like things without using “like” or “as”.

Onomatopoeia- A word whose sound imitates the sound associated with its meaning.

  • "...her anger,/ simmering over like a pot in an empty kitchen,..." (Ot of the Dust, pg.41)

Simile- A figure of speech comparing two unlike things with the words “like” or “as”.

  • The little boy was as quiet as a mouse.
