Rates and Unit Rates

Happy Friday! We are going to do a little review of rates and unit rates today.

Rate

A rate is a comparison of two numbers with different units:

 $\frac{60\ miles}{4\ hours}$   or  $\ \frac{15\ miles}{1\ hour}$  

A rate is NOT

We do NOT compare the same units when writing rates.

 $\frac{2\ miles}{3\ miles}$  

or  $22\ blocks\ for\ every\ 2\ blocks$

A special rate where you compare to the number 1!

To find a unit rate we need to simply divide!

• 1. Write your rate as a fraction

• 2. Set it equal to 

   $\frac{?}{1}$  

• 3. Divide by the denominator

Example:

Find the unit rate if there are 20 passengers in 10 cars.

• 1. Write your rate as a fraction.

•  $\frac{20\ passengers}{10\ cars}$  

Example:

Find the unit rate if there are 20 passengers in 10 cars.

• 2. Set equal to

   $\frac{?}{1}$  

•  $\frac{20\ passengers}{10\ cars}=\frac{?}{1\ car}$  

Example:

Find the unit rate if there are 20 passengers in 10 cars.

• 3. Divide by the denominator

•  $\frac{20\ passengers\div10}{10\ cars\ \div\ 10}$  

Example:

Find the unit rate if there are 20 passengers in 10 cars.

• Once you do the division you have your unit rate:

•  $\frac{20\div10=2}{10\div10=1}$  -> $\frac{2\ passengers}{1\ car}$
