Now on to our lesson

Meaning of Division

35

How many Candy Canes?

  • What is the addition fact than can be used to find the number of candy canes.

  • What is the multiplication fact we can use to find the number of candy canes?

  • What is the multiplication twin?

Slide image

36

There is yet another way!

  • Division!

  • In division we start with the total number of candy canes: 12

  • We then divide by the number of candy canes in each group: 2

  • The answer, or quotient , is the number of groups: 6

Ways to write a division problem

These two equations are equal. The first uses a division sign, the second uses a division house.

38

Dividend

the number that is being divided in the division process.

39

Dividend is in the gift box.

40

Divisor

the number by which dividend is being divided by.

42

Quotient

the answer to a division problem

5 steps

These 5 steps can be used to solve all division problems.

Slide image

45

Let's try one together

  • Think: What number times 2 equals 4?

  • Think: How many 2s are in 4?

  • The divisor tells us what multiplication table we will use.

Slide image

46

Step 2

  • Write the quotient above the division house over the 4.

  • Step 2 in division is Multiplication.

  • Place a small multiplication sign at the corner of the division house.

  •  2×2=2\times2=

Slide image

47

Step 3: Subtraction

  • Write the product beneath the divisor.

  • Since step 3 is subtraction, place your subtraction sign and draw a total line.

  •  44=4-4=

Slide image

48

Step 4: Compare

  • Write the difference beneath the total line.

  • Compare the difference with the divisor.

  • The difference should be less than the divisor. If it is equal to or greater than, a mistake was made.

Slide image

49

Step 5: Bring Down

  • Bring down the next digit in the dividend.

  • Since there are no more digits to bring down, the problem is finished.

Slide image

50

Use these 5 steps

  •  6÷26\div2

  •  8÷28\div2
