Would, Would Like, Would Rather

Remember: We use Would, Would Like, Would Rather.....

to express suggestions and preferences.

Would:

is used to ask the question. It is followed by the base form of the verb (it does NOT have the infinitive: "to").

Example: Would you go to the movies with me?

"Would you help me out with this?"

"I would help you out but I am really busy right now, sorry."

Would like:

is used to make a suggestion. It is followed by the infinitive "to" then the base form of the verb.

Example: Would you like to play on my volleyball team!?

"Would you like to play soccer with us?"

+ "Yes, I would like to play soccer with you."

- "No, I wouldn't like to play soccer with you, thank you."

Would rather:

is used to express a preference. It is followed by the base form of the verb (it does NOT have the infinitive: "to").

Example: I would rather eat tacos and not pizza.

"Would you rather go to the park or to the cinema?"

"I would rather go to the cinema."
