2

Learning outcomes

  • Recall the different features of sound wave

  • Calculate frequency and the speed of sound

3

Starter quiz

Join the Quizizz to recap sound and light!

4

Sound waves

  • Amplitude (how high the peaks go) = volume

  • Higher the amplitude, the louder the sound

  • Frequency (1/time between peaks) = pitch

  • Higher the frequency, the higher the pitch (the closer the waves are together, the higher the pitch)

9

Calculating frequency

Frequency = 1/time taken for one wave to be completed

E.g. it takes 1 second for one wave to be completed.

Frequency = 1/1 = 1Hz

10

Open Ended

It takes 2 seconds for one wave to be completed. What is the frequency in Hz?

11

Open Ended

It takes 4 seconds for one wave to be completed. What is the frequency in Hz?

12

Open Ended

It takes 0.5 seconds for one wave to be completed. What is the frequency in Hz?

13

Calculating the speed of a sound

Sound travels at 350 meters/second in air

This means that in one second, a sound can travel 350m!

In 2 seconds, it will travel 700m.

14

Open Ended

Sounds travels at 350m/second. How long will it take to travel 1050m?

15

Open Ended

A loud noise was made 700m away. How long would it take for you to hear the sound? (Speed of sound = 350m/s)

Christmas sound and light quiz

In pairs, create at least 5 quiz questions about light and sound with a Christmas theme!

E.g. calculating the speed of sound from sleigh bells, or which colours are reflected or absorbed by Father Christmas's coat?
