Food Chain

Food Chain- Flow of energy (linear) from producer to tertiary consumers.

A food chain starts off with a producers (plants) and shows how energy is moving between the organisms.

The arrows show the flow of energy

How to read a food chain

  • All food chains start with the sun (Most will never put it on the actual chain)

  • Then energy moves to the producer (organism that makes its own food) in this case we have seaweed

  • Next the fish eats the seaweed and gains the energy

  • Next the shark eats the fish and gains the energy

  • Lastly the zooplankton feeds on the shark after it dies to gain energy.

How are the food chain different from the food web?

9

Food Web

Food Web- Flow of energy in the overall ecosystem between all of the biotic (living) factors. The food web has many paths to show the many options for energy to flow.

Represents all of the food chains in the ecosystem

The arrows still show the flow of energy.
